You want to figure out how to carry concealed when you are surrounded by anti-gunnists? Congratulations on making the decision to take your protection into your own hands. That is certainly the first step. Now you must determine exactly how you are going to accomplish this goal when there are people all around you who would love to thwart your efforts. Fortunately, it is as easy as ABC.

A: Attitude

You must have confidence in your decision to learn how to carry concealed. This decision is about keeping safe, and no one else has anything to do with it.

Don’t try to convert others. When you first learn to shoot you may be very excited and proud of your new abilities. You have every right to be proud of your accomplishments and decisions. Unfortunately, if you are in a sea of anti-gunnists they will not support your efforts and will probably attempt to dissuade your from learning how to carry concealed.

B: Basics

The next step is all about learning. Learning how to carry concealed is not just about the gun and holster, although those are critical elements. You must also learn about the laws in your area. Where can you legally carry? Do you need a special permit, and if you do, how do you get one? When must you let a police officer know that you are carrying? What are legal ramifications if you fire your weapon? Luckily, most of this information can be gathered from the internet.

Go beyond the legalities and think about how carrying a concealed weapon could impact your life and be prepared for that. Do you want to carry at work, presuming it is both legal and not against your company’s rules? Are you going to figure out how to carry concealed as close to 24/7 as possible or only when you believe you are at most risk? How will carrying affect your activities and clothing choices? Are you still going to be able to join the local pick-up basketball game on Wednesday nights, for example?

There are also emotional, psychological, and moral issues to take into consideration when learning how to carry concealed. Are you prepared to kill someone? How will you deal with it afterwards if you do shoot? It is essential to think about these things before you are faced with the situation.

Your best defense around anti-gunnists is to be a responsible gun owner. Know how to use your weapon. Learn how to carry concealed for your own safety and how to keep others safe.

C: Carry

Determine how to carry concealed so that it works best for you and then carry, carry, carry. Practice drawing your weapon and reholstering it. Practice firing from a variety of positions.

Especially when first determining how to carry concealed, it is recommended that you stick with one gun and one holster. This may limit your clothing options, but you want to be able to reach for your weapon with confidence if you ever need it. The last thing you want to do in the event of an attack is have to think about which holster you are wearing!

Be confident in your decision, learn gun basics. Determine when and how to carry concealed for your personal safety. Follow these three steps and you will be able to carry even among anti-gunnists.

Many people who decide to take advantage of our legal right as Americans to bear arms want to learn how to carry concealed because they don’t really want to walk around looking like a cowboy from the movies. Six-shooters strapped to fringed chaps just isn’t a popular look these days! Beyond that however, they may not be clear on the priorities for carrying weapons.

What is the most important consideration for how to carry concealed properly? Is it the gun, the holster, the physical training, or the licensing? While all of these things are important, the biggest emphasis should be placed on your mindset. Without the proper mindset you will never learn how to carry concealed properly, effectively, and safely.

If you are even thinking about joining the ranks of armed citizens, it is essential that you spend a little time and be sure you have the proper mindset for it. It comes down to one big question: if you were put into a life-or-death situation, could you take the life of another human being?

This isn’t an easy question for most people to answer, and as long as there is hesitation in your own mind then you have some thinking to do in order to learn how to carry concealed properly. If you are placed in a position of having to protect yourself or your family, the last thing you want running through your mind is doubt about whether or not you can, or should pull the trigger.

The truth is that learning how to carry concealed is not for everyone. If your religious beliefs are such that you could never shoot another human being, even to save your spouse, then you should not carry a gun! On the other hand, if you are afraid of the potential legal consequences, then educating yourself on the legal rights and responsibilities may counter those fears.

Rational people do not carry because their goal is to shoot other people. But rational people do learn how to carry concealed weapons in order to protect themselves and their families. Unfortunately, too often these seemingly rational people don’t invest the necessary time in their mindset that will enable them to mentally, physically, and emotionally come through a life-threatening situation intact.

Maybe you already think you know how to carry concealed, and you think you are ready. Perhaps you already believe that you could shoot another person if your life depended on it. Or perhaps you would shoot someone to defend your wife or daughter. Even for you, it is important to get the mindset training that will prepare you for such an event. It is not only about being able to pull the trigger, it is about pulling the trigger while looking at another living, breathing human being. It is also about surviving an attack without beating yourself up later, wondering if you could have handled it differently.

Before you spend a dime on guns, on shooting lessons, or on holsters, start working on your mindset. Getting the right mindset isn’t done in one shot, it is an on-going education for most of us, something that we get over time, and it is an important first step for anyone looking into how to carry concealed.

Learning how to carry concealed weapons safely is the best way to stay alive in the event that you actually find yourself in a dangerous situation.

Getting a Permit

Check your state’s website to find out which government agency issues the concealed carry permit. Make sure you meet all the criteria to get your permit, which may require training. If you are applying for a permit in a “may issue” state, either officially or by practice, write a letter that justifies your need to carry a weapon, fill out the application, and pay the fees which may include fees for fingerprints, photos, or background checks.

Safety

You need training to feel confident when using your weapon in a dangerous situation, whether required in order to get a concealed carry permit or not. Remember that shooting in a range is far different than firing at a moving target, which is usually the case in life. Learning to move and shoot is important.

Practice Drawing

Once you have selected your holster, practice drawing your weapon. You really can’t practice enough, so practice at home with your unloaded weapon. This will allow you to draw the weapon from a variety of positions. All this practice will give you what is called “muscle memory” so that if you are faced with a situation where you need your gun you, won’t even have to think about it; you will automatically know where your gun is and draw it.

Varying Shooting Position

Attackers are not going to wait for you to be in proper firing range form. The onus is on you to be able to not only draw your weapon from a variety of positions but to also be able to shoot it with accuracy. This keeps you in the power position and minimizes the possibility of harming an innocent bystander.

Mental Preparation

Often the act of brandishing your weapon will be enough to stop a threat, but in the event that it doesn’t, it is essential that you be prepared to use it. It is much harder to shoot a gun at another living being than most of us would believe. Anyone with a concealed carry permit must be aware that there is a distinct possibility that if you are placed in a position to use your weapon, the person you shoot will be hurt or killed. If you are not prepared mentally for this possible outcome, you may hesitate rather than shoot in a critical moment. That hesitation may cost you your life.

Keeping Current

Renew your concealed carry permit before it expires. It is easier, faster, and less expensive to renew a current license than to get a new license. In many instances, renewal is a matter of sending in a fee, but some states do require you take additional gun safety training for each renewal. Don’t count on having any grace period after your permit expires; you may find that you have to start all over again.

Hopefully, you will never find yourself in a situation where you have to fire your gun. In the event you that do, learning how to carry concealed weapons may be what keeps you and your family alive.

A growing number of women are choosing to exercise their right to keep and bear arms. Here are some tips on how to carry concealed for the petite packing heat, starting with gun selection, where you will carry your weapon on your body, and how to conceal the gun in a variety of outfits and seasons.

Size Matters

The first thing a woman should take into account is her physical size and how that affects her ability to handle a firearm with accuracy and safety. Take the time to try several different guns to see what fits best n your hand. You may find that you are comfortable with a variety of guns from a tiny .380 to a double-stack S&W M&P compact 9mm, and you may want to own more than one weapon. This will give you some flexibility in carrying, allowing you to pick your pistol to suit your outfit. But keep in mind that the more guns and holsters you have and the more places you carry your weapon, the less able you will be to reach for the gun with confidence should you need it. Start with one weapon that you want to carry on a regular basis and find how to conceal that weapon in a way that works for you most of the time. If you have several weapons to choose from, then you might consider the smallest one, as it will give you the most options for concealment.

Assess Your Wardrobe

Deciding to carry a concealed weapon should not require that you have to get an entirely new wardrobe. Instead, you want to select a way to carry your weapon that fits with your present style of dress. In order to determine the right holster, you must first evaluate the clothes already in your closet. While it may be best to have a single-holster style, that may not work for every outfit you own, since simple things like the cut of the leg of your pants to belt loops and even to the color of your clothes can have an effect on how and where you carry on-body. Decide if there are outfits that you are confident you will not wear while carrying, and take them out of the analysis. After looking through your clothes, you may find that you can easily have just two different holsters with your existing wardrobe or even fewer by adding some select garments.

Be sure to take summer or skimpier cloting nto consideration, too, which will definitely make concealing your weapon more of a challenge.

Women can, of course, carry with an OWB (over the waistband) holster, but they tend to be big and bulky, so many women choose either an IWB (inside the waistband), thigh, or ankle holster — whichever works better for their frame and wardrobe.

Accessorizing

Sometimes carrying a gun on-body is just not an option. It may be that it isn’t comfortable for you or that a particular outfit has no place for concealment. In that case, there is always the option of carrying a gun purse. Rather than tossing your gun in your purse, it is best to have a dedicated bag with a compartment specifically to hold your gun. This allows you to more easily draw your weapon in the event that you need it.

Taking the time to learn which weapons best suit your frame and wardrobe is one of the most important parts of learning how to carry concealed for a woman. After all, what good is owning a gun if you don’t have it with you when you need it?

When asked how to carry concealed weapons through airport security the short answer is “Yes, you can do it but you have to do it correctly.”

It is perfectly legal to transport a weapon on a commercial airliner,. There are very strict regulations set out by the FAA and the Transportation Security Administration(TSA), and that generally does not allow for a passenger to carry any firearm through security or in the passenger area of the aircraft.

The FAA requires that all firearms are unloaded and must be stored in hard-sided luggage that locks. Additionally, it is required that the weapon be declared at time of checking in at the main counter. And the weapon must be checked in, not in your carry-on luggage. Some people suggest that you could dismantle the weapon and then carry in on board with you, but the regulations currently stipulate that neither firearms, ammunition, nor “firearm parts” may be in carry-on bags.

How To Carry A Gun While Flying – Rules From The TSA:

You must declare all firearms to the airline during the ticket counter check-in process. You will have to go to the TSA agent and tell them what you are carrying.

The firearm must be unloaded. Enough said there…

The firearm must be in a hard-sided container. (More about this later in the article)

The container must be locked. A locked container is defined as one that completely secures the firearm from being accessed. Locked cases that can be pulled open with little effort cannot be brought aboard the aircraft. What they mean here is that you can’t have a case that can be easily preyed open. They want the weapon absolutely secure.

“If firearms are not properly declared or packaged, TSA will provide the bag to law enforcement for resolution with the airline. If the issue is resolved, law enforcement will release the bag to TSA so screening may be completed.” You don’t want to mess around with this due to the consequences of what will happen if you don’t follow the rules so make sure you follow their rules.

TSA must resolve all alarms of checked luggage. If a locked container containing a firearm alarms, TSA will contact the airline, who will make a reasonable attempt to contact the owner and advise the passenger to go to the screening location. If contact is not made, the container will not be placed on the aircraft.

If a locked container alarms during screening and is not marked as containing a declared firearm, TSA will cut the lock in order to resolve the alarm.

Travelers should remain in the area designated by the aircraft operator or TSA representative to take the key back after the container is cleared for transportation.

Travelers must securely pack any ammunition in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition. Pretty straight forward.

Firearm magazines and ammunition clips must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Most hard cases have slots for your clips.

Small arms ammunition, including ammunition not exceeding .75 caliber for a rifle or pistol and shotgun shells of any gauge, may be carried in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as it follows the packing guidelines described above.

TSA prohibits black powder or percussion caps used with black-powder. Duh..

Guns and firearms, as defined by the TSA, also include compressed air guns such as paintball guns, pellet guns, BB guns, flare guns, gun lighters without lighter fluid, starter pistols, and “realistic” replicas. Gun powder, caps, flares, and lighter fluid may not be brought on board or in packed in checked luggage.

When you let the attendant at the check-in counter know that you are checking a weapon you will be given documentation to place inside the gun case that lets security know the gun was declared. Procedures do vary among airlines, and may be more stringent than the TSA regulations, so it is smart to call ahead and know the procedure for the airline you will be traveling with.

Laws in other countries regarding transporting firearms may be different from the regulations set out by the TSA. If your trip is taking you outside of the United States then be sure to check the laws of all the countries where you will be landing, even if the place is not your final destination.

Violating the TSA regulations can result penalties of $2,000 per violation and you could be criminally prosecuted on both local and state levels. So, there really is only one answer as to how to carry concealed weapons on board an airplane — you can’t. Unless you are an Air Marshall or other professional specifically authorized to so, you must follow TSA rules, and properly check your weapon.

TSA and Case Information

Each airline, and each member of the TSA security personnel will likely interpret the laws and airline rules of flying with your concealed firearm a bit differently than intended. You need to sound some time thinking about this before hand.

1.The case cannot be pulled open with little effort? What do they mean by that? You should invest in a case that is rugged. Whatever you do don’t get a cheap, flimsy container that can easily be pried open with bare hands. Ensure that the case has latches that can be opened while the padlocks on the case are in position (needs to lock on both ends not just in the middle – this is important to prevent prying), that the case can’t be opened even a little bit. Imagine a shed door that has a hasp and a padlock with a knob to turn to open the door when the padlock is removed.

You don’t want to mess around with a loose-fitting lock, you want one that is especially sturdy. I can’t stress that point enough to you.

The way that the TSA has worded their rules gives them room for the TSA personnel to determine if your firearm case fits that individuals approval. So don’t mess around and just buy a sturdy one that won’t budge open an inch when you have the locks in place. Probably a locking mechanism that prevents the latches from being opened at all when locked would be best. That way when the padlocks are in place the latches can’t even be opened.

So what’s a responsibly-armed citizen to do? We recommend investing in an extremely sturdy plastic case such as a North Star case or even a Hardigg case . Just be sure to get a good lock that doesn’t allow any movement at all.

As for loaded magazines I would personally not have any loaded for traveling by air. Its just not a good idea. I would have ammunition stored in the original container I bought it in (which is what the TSA website actually recommends), and if I didn’t have the container I would buy a new box of fresh ammo. You can never have enough ammo right?

I would have any magazines and the gun completely empty. I’d even add a plastic barrel plug as an extra measure for untrained personnel to see that the gun is unloaded when I’m getting the declaration form – it just further helps you cover your bases.

Please remember, a responsibly-armed person like you can follow the letter of the rules and law only to be denied due to one TSA agent’s interpretation of the laws and rules. Best to follow all of the rules, guidelines, and protocols as to not call attention to yourself for increased scrutiny. Still, an overzealous TSA agent could single out anyone at any time for further inspection. A backup plan in place to leave the gun behind should be in place just in case they say no way. If dropped off at the airport, I’d have someone stick around in case I needed them to take my gun back home (not ideal but better than nothing). I recommend showing up really early as I have been put through the paces a few times because of declaring a firearm.

Air travelers travel with firearms every day without incident. However, there is always the exception to the rule. Following the suggestions above, checking the TSA guidelines, checking your specific Airline’s guidelines, and preparing appropriately is the best way to carry a gun with you when flying.

Stay safe!

The most critical when deciding how to carry concealed is to make sure you can do so in comfort. No one wants to carry a weapon if it makes them uncomfortable. Points to consider include where you like to carry on-body, your style of dress, what allows you to easily and confidently draw your weapon, and if you have any physical limitations that would affect carrying comfortably.

Where You Carry

Where you decide to carry your weapon may be impacted by the actual size of your weapon, but it is also important to determine how easily you can reach your gun if you need it. Each gun owner must determine the most comfortable on-body position, taking into account their body shape and the activities they participate in while carrying.

The depth that the gun rides in the holster as well as at what angle will greatly affect your comfort, your ability to draw the weapon, and how securely the gun stays in place as you move.

An office worker, who sits at a desk all day, will probably make a very different carrying choice from a plumber who has to get in out of a vehicle and finds himself in various positions — stretching and reaching and even lying on the floor.

Personal Style

If you wear a jacket all the time, then you may opt for a shoulder holster. Like a tucked-in look? You will probably be reaching for an IWB (inside the waistband) holster. Live in Hawaiian shirts and shorts? You might opt for an OWB (outside the waistband) holster.

Choose a holster that fits your style rather than trying to change the way you dress in order to concealed carry. That will go a long way to keeping you comfortable while you carry.

Try several different holsters before committing to one. Some people like real leather because they like how it softens with age and molds to their body. Other people find fabric holsters more comfortable because they can “breathe,” and because they are fabric, may be available in a variety of colors, making it easier to conceal your weapon under a variety of attire.

Personal Limitations and Attributes

It is also important to consider any personal limitations or attributes that you have when determining how to carry concealed. Carrying a concealed weapon is not just for young men in size 32 jeans. Just about anyone can safely protect themselves with proper training, practice, and by making the appropriate choices in weapons and concealment. For example, having a large belly will help determine where you can comfortably carry — and that is true, whether you have a “beer belly” or you are pregnant.

If you have limited strength or mobility, whether it is from age, injury or illness, there is probably still way that you can carry concealed. The best way to figure out how to do it is to accurately assess your current situation, including your personal condition, as well as your style. Once you have done that, it is a matter of trying on a variety of weapons and holsters until you find the combination that works best for you.
