How to Carry Concealed for Petite, Packing Heat

how to carry concealed for women

A growing number of women are choosing to exercise their right to keep and bear arms. Here are some tips on how to carry concealed for the petite packing heat, starting with gun selection, where you will carry your weapon on your body, and how to conceal the gun in a variety of outfits and seasons.

Size Matters

The first thing a woman should take into account is her physical size and how that affects her ability to handle a firearm with accuracy and safety. Take the time to try several different guns to see what fits best n your hand. You may find that you are comfortable with a variety of guns from a tiny .380 to a double-stack S&W M&P compact 9mm, and you may want to own more than one weapon. This will give you some flexibility in carrying, allowing you to pick your pistol to suit your outfit. But keep in mind that the more guns and holsters you have and the more places you carry your weapon, the less able you will be to reach for the gun with confidence should you need it. Start with one weapon that you want to carry on a regular basis and find how to conceal that weapon in a way that works for you most of the time. If you have several weapons to choose from, then you might consider the smallest one, as it will give you the most options for concealment.

Assess Your Wardrobe

Deciding to carry a concealed weapon should not require that you have to get an entirely new wardrobe. Instead, you want to select a way to carry your weapon that fits with your present style of dress. In order to determine the right holster, you must first evaluate the clothes already in your closet. While it may be best to have a  single-holster style, that may not work for every outfit you own, since simple things like the cut of the leg of your pants to belt loops and even to the color of your clothes can have an effect on how and where you carry on-body. Decide if there are outfits that you are confident you will not wear while carrying, and take them out of the analysis. After looking through your clothes, you may find that you can easily have just two different holsters with your existing wardrobe or even fewer by adding some select garments.

Be sure to take summer or skimpier cloting nto consideration, too, which will definitely make concealing your weapon more of a challenge.

Women can, of course, carry with an OWB (over the waistband) holster, but they tend to be big and bulky, so many women choose either an IWB (inside the waistband),  thigh, or ankle holster — whichever works better for their frame and wardrobe.

Accessorizing

Sometimes carrying a gun on-body is just not an option. It may be that it isn’t comfortable for you or that a particular outfit has no place for concealment. In that case, there is always the option of carrying a gun purse. Rather than tossing your gun in your purse, it is best to have a dedicated bag with a compartment specifically to hold your gun. This allows you to more easily draw your weapon in the event that you need it.

Taking the time to learn which weapons best suit your frame and wardrobe is one of the most important parts of learning how to carry concealed for a woman. After all, what good is owning a gun if you don’t have it with you when you need it?

  1. I tell you, the more I read, the more interested I become. I just feel like I don’t know where to start. Thanks for this information! It’s very helpful.

  2. I remember when I had to carry a gun on me at all times while running a grocery store in a very bad part of town.

One of the important things for me was to find a gun that I could easily conceal on my side, but still had enough communication to maintain a sustainable defense from a large gang.

I found that Glock made a very nice small model which supported an extended clip to give me the best of both worlds.
